CNN’s Chris Cuomo Has COVID-19, Quarantines In His Basement

Add Chris Cuomo to the growing list of Americans both famous and obscure caught up in the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

The CNN Anchor announced his diagnosis on social media today, saying he was exposed to people who later tested positive for the potentially deadly disease. He decided to get checked out after he began feeling ill with fever, chills, and shortness of breath.

"I just hope I didn't give it to the kids and Cristina (his wife)," Cuomo wrote. "That would make me feel worse than this illness!"

For now, the 49-year-old is quarantining himself in his basement, where he plans to continue to host his show Cuomo Prime Time. He joked that his family seemed pleased with his new isolation and expects to make a full recovery.

Cuomo, whose late father Mario Cuomo served as governor of New York from 1983 to 1994, said on his show that he was uncomfortable with the media's focus being on him. He interviewed CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker about the pandemic. He also discussed the stress of health care workers with a nurse from Georgia named Carley Rice.

"This is so small compared with what so many are facing," he said, adding that he was proof that anyone can be sickened in the pandemic.

Chris Cuomo's brother Andrew is the current governor of New York and has been a frequent critic of the Trump Administration's handling of the worsening crisis where New York is at the epicenter.
Government scientists today warned that COVID-19 could kill between 100.000 and 240,000 Americans. President Donald Trump spoke of a "painful two weeks ahead." The pandemic is forcing awkward conversations about keeping vulnerable people safe from the potentially deadly pathogen.

The Cuomos are a case in point.

In a press conference earlier today, Andrew Cuomo said he was concerned that Chris Cuomo had recently hosted their elderly mother Matilda at his house. He told his younger brother that the family gathering was "a mistake."

According to CNN.com, Chris Cuomo was last in CNN's New York City studios on Friday. He anchored Cuomo Prime Time from his basement on Monday. Among his guests was his older brother. Chris Cuomo repeatedly pressed Andrew about whether the governor ever intended to run for president. For the record, Andrew Cuomo said he isn't interested in the job.
